Dr. Jeff Hartley is Technical Director for General Motors Global Product Research, overseeing all product research globally for luxury and midsize cars. He is the GM subject matter expert for all design-related research. He joined GM in 1985 after completing his PhD and MA in Psychology at Arizona State University. He holds a B.A. in Psychology from Indiana University.
His research interest is in applying psychological methods and principles to both the production and perception of designed artifacts. Exploiting what is known in the academic world of psychology to the business world, his work has focused primarily on automotive design but is applicable to design in general.
Dr. Hartley has over 30 years teaching and applied experience. He is the author or co-author of several publications. In 2015, he received the Best Paper Award from the ASME/IDETC 27th International Conference on Design Theory and Methodology.
