MECHENG 566 - Modeling Analysis and Control of Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Course Description

Hybrid and electric vehicles are currently the dominant technologies in the new generation of automobiles. This course examines the newest major sub-systems of hybrid and electrified vehicles—including the engine—as well as the integration of these sub-systems into the vehicle as a whole. Students will complete a final project of their choice on a topic related to hybrid and electric vehicles.

The course covers the modeling, analysis and control of vehicles with electrified propulsion systems, including electric vehicles, hybrids, plug-in and fuel cell vehicles. The course will introduce students to the concepts and terminology, state-of-the-art developments, energy conversion and storage options, modeling, analysis, system integration and basic principles of vehicle controls. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to follow the literature on these subjects and perform modeling, design, analysis and development work in this field.


Knowledge in Internal Combustion Engine and Automatic Control are helpful but are not required.

Matlab/Simulink will be used extensively for example problems and homework problems. Therefore, prior experience with MATLAB is strongly recommended. A tutorial will be available for students prior to the beginning of the course.
