This course focuses the power of Six Sigma Green Belt training on healthcare applications. Participants will learn how to identify, frame, and effectively solve quality problems in healthcare organizations at the Green Belt skill level. They will master tools that help to define problems, collect data, analyze, resolve, and implement systems and procedures. The results can bring increased value to organizations as measured by revenue growth, cost savings, reduction in customer complaints, and patient satisfaction improvements.

Health systems today face many of the same challenges that have prompted manufacturers and service providers to focus on continuous improvement practices. These challenges include customer demands and expectations for high quality; escalating competition that is driving the need to reduce waste and lower costs; and multi-dimensional problems that require cross-organizational solutions. In addition, health systems face governmental and societal pressures to improve and to eliminate potential mistakes that can have life-threatening implications.

The critical need to drive ownership and accountability into organizational culture and processes by adopting sustainable continuous improvement is widely recognized throughout health systems today. Six Sigma Green Belt Healthcare teaches participants how to use Six Sigma methodology to maximize continuous improvement by applying the fundamental elements of quality management, problem solving, and data analysis to healthcare organizations.

Six Sigma can foster a cross-departmental approach to identifying root causes of quality and process inefficiencies and improving performance. Ultimately, Six Sigma for healthcare can help to provide a catalyst to find answers to the question, "What is the right strategy?"

Six Sigma analyses can be applied to a vast array of health system issues that also lend themselves to student projects. Examples include the following:

    • Patient Satisfaction: Wait time, medical errors, length of stay, fewer patients leaving without being seen
    • Medical Operations: Procedure quality, procedure time, equipment utilization, staff utilization, staff scheduling, diagnostic time
    • Laboratory Testing: Efficiency, testing errors, availability capacity (patients per lab per workday)
    • Administrative: Corrections, billing, insurance denials
  • Program Components

Each module of this course consists of one to two hours of web-based instruction, with an accompanying exercise. Exercises are a combination of multiple choice and Six Sigma data analysis problem sets. (Microsoft Excel is required to conduct analysis). The examples used throughout the course are based on real world Six Sigma Healthcare projects.

    Professional Certification

Students pursuing the University of Michigan Six Sigma Green Belt Healthcare Certification must score 80% or higher on required exercises and complete a Six Sigma course project for certification. Students may either choose a healthcare Six Sigma project from their own workplace (with instructor approval) or select a prepared case study project developed by University of Michigan faculty. These Six Sigma Green Belt case studies simulate actual projects and include a problem solving scenario with a data set. They have been designed such that students should be able to complete the entire Six Sigma Green Belt project in less than eight hours.

    CEU Credits

Upon successful completion of this 40-hour program, students will receive four Continuing Education Units (CEU's). This course is not for academic credit. CEU credits may not be applied toward a degree. The University of Michigan will provide necessary documentation upon request.

    Program Fees and Timeline

$2,300 covers the Online Six Sigma Green Belt Healthcare program.

Students have 180 days from the start of the program to complete the program and submit their project. Typically students complete the full certification within 3 months.

If you do not complete the course within 180 days from your start date you will be required to re-enroll at a reduced cost of $500 to receive an additional 180 days to complete the program.
