Dr. Diann Brei, Chair of Integrative Systems + Design, was awarded the ASME 2018 Adaptive Structures & Materials Award at the Conference on Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures and Intelligent Systems (SMASIS) on September 10-12, 2018, in San Antonio, Texas.
The ASME Adaptive Structures and Materials Systems Prize is presented to a member of the technical community who has made significant contributions to the advancement of the sciences and technologies associated with adaptive structures and/or material systems. The award is intended to honor a lifetime of achievement and sustained impact in the field and is given only to a senior researcher.
The $2,000 cash award and certificate recognizes scientific contributions as measured by leadership, technical publications, and advances made within the field.

The Adaptive Structures and Material Systems Prize was established in 1993 by the Aerospace Division and operated as a divisional award until 2014, when it was elevated to a society award and assumed its current name.
SMASIS is a leading conference on adaptive structures and materials systems that attracts approximately 300 attendees each year with over 250 technical presentations. The conference provides a unique forum bringing together scientists, faculty and graduate students from Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical and Civil Engineering, Materials Science, and Mathematics whose research spans topics in adaptive structures and smart material systems.
A faculty member of Michigan Engineering since 1994, Dr. Brei is a vanguard leader in research, education and service, building highly effective communities that work across boundaries and disciplines to create lasting value to society.
