ISD 541 (AUTO 541) Fundamentals of Vehicle Dynamics

ISD 541 (AUTO 541) Course Description

The course will provide an overview of Vehicle Dynamics concepts and terminology and then walk progressively through all major aspects of Vehicle Dynamics from the simplest longitudinal accelerations/moments to combined longitudinal, lateral and vertical accelerations/moments.  The course content is divided into modules using motorsports terminology.  The Starting Grid is the module containing the introduction to Vehicle Dynamics and the Sectors are modules where vehicle response behavior and physics will be covered.  Lastly, Pitstops will be the modules where vehicle parameters will be covered.

To provide students an opportunity to understand the physics, well-defined assignments using CarSim will be employed every week where students can experiment with a limited scope of driver inputs and vehicle parameters to see the resultant vehicle behaviors.  In addition, each week there will be a synchronous discussion session where key relevant Vehicle Dynamics issues.
