Prerequisites for Admission

Entrance requirements are similar to other Master of Engineering degree programs in the College of Engineering. They include:

  • Undergraduate degree in engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, or mathematics.
  • The GRE is required for all Master of Engineering (M.Eng) degrees beginning with applications for Winter 2018 enrollment.

    The GRE is recommended but not required for all Master of Science (MS) or PhD applications (Design Science degree programs only).

    Please contact ETS to have an official score report sent to the University of Michigan (institution code 1839).

    GRE scores must be five years old or less as of the application deadline to be used for consideration.
  • Two letters of recommendation, one-page resume, a one-page statement of purpose, and official undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) transcripts are required.
  • Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency and are required to provide an official score report from either the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB), the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS), or the Examination for the Michigan Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE). If a student received a bachelor's degree from a college or university where the language of instruction is exclusively English, the English proficiency requirement MAY be waived.
